The following pic's show the progress of the chassis from the day we removed it from the body, up until it was ready for the body to go back on again. It has been over 8 years in the making.
I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Looking at these pics (and all of the tear down pics) this car was in really sad shape.

(ABOVE) the chassis was rolled out from under the body just minutes before it was pulled apart. The picture looks kind of dark because we wrestled it out in front of the garage in the early dawn morning.
The car had been parked in 1982 and left for rot. The tires that you see in this pic were on the car, and held air for almost five more years. It was such a waiste....the tires still had the 'nipples' in the tread!

(BELOW) right after buying our own house, me and my son (lil' rob) started sanding down the chassis and getting it ready to paint. we had just got the new floor welded in, but the job was less than 'satisfying' after we started renovations, a friend fixed all of the issues; leaving the chassis in need of repainting...again. |
(ABOVE) The floor was rotting out in a small section near the pedals. I decided the floor needed to be replaced so we cut it all out. This is what was left. The designers of the VW built the car around the tunnel that runs down the middle. It is the support for the whole vehicle.

<<<<< (LEFT) The chassis is on its way. I chose the the Orange because it stood out so much. I am hoping it will help accent the work done there. |
(RIGHT) A rear shot of the chassis under construction.>>>>

<<<<(LEFT) The chassis is done. We replaced the ball joints, the shocks, the front brake assembly, rear brake assembly, tie rods, master cylinder, brake lines, and all of the cables. The chassis is as ready it can get. With every worn, or defective part replaced, and a rebuilt tranny waiting for a motor, I cannot wait to get the body back on.
